Engine serial numbers should match tractor serial?

Is it true that with Farmalls the engine serial number should match the tractor serial number? Where is the engine serial number located, is it stamped or is there a tag?
Thanks
Don

On the ones I have looked at they have matched(both Hs). The engine serial is part of the cast as I remember, just below the spark plug holes.

The serial # will be stamped into a flat machined area on you engine block. No not all tractor # match mostly the older ones have matched #
I have SC that never matched. oldiron29

Cubs were mismatched soon after introduction due to some engines being shipped to parts depots and dealers for service replacements. Typically the engine in a Cub will have a higher serial number than will the tractor.

The letter series mostly matched until WW 2. After that they began to differ some. On my 42 M the engine and chassis are close, but different. the further along in years they got, the more the difference.

Most block sizesand displacements of IH engines were used in a variety of equipment. From power units to graders. From combines to balers. The engines were (mostly) sequentially numbered and thus were out of step soon after the second world war as production shot up. Jim

A, B, and H (at least most of the H's) match. A,B, serial and engine match up to 201000. C, maybe. The Super series, no.

I have a 50 C that the numbers don't match on , and when I got some of the old boooks from grandpa he had the numbers written down and they didn't match ever
