My Farmall M is missing the rectangular grille insert that fits into the lower front grill on the tractor. Probably need to add this insert to better protect the radiator. Can someone tell me how this attaches to the main grille?

It pretty much just pops in and pops out. Very common for them to get lost over the years and since a few pieces of equipment hooked up in that area they would get laid to the side and forgot about over the years

Theres a small 'bar" on the backside of the insert that goes in the center of the lower and upper sections of the grill where the hole is. Then the screw is tightend and this wedges in the insert. You have to have a pretty good, complete grill for it to work right.

There is a bar on the back of it that you turn and tighten down with the flat head screw that is in the center of it .

The reproduction ones that you can buy for $35.00 or what ever they cost "suck" there not even close to fitting let alone the bar width isn't the same . [face]

I got mine from O.E.M and never used it. Find a orignal one that isn't messed up and it will fit like a champ.

One early version of a two row cultivator had a shift arm that attached to the bolster. The bracket passed through the grill opening. I believe the F-20 used a similar system. It was suppose to give you quick response in steering with the "shifting gang" cultivator. When you turned the wheel to the right the 4 row plows (two on each side of the row) would shift to the right also.

Not really. A swinging "bar" held them in place, which was tightened by a screw. mike

You know I have been meaning to go out an look at the M and the Hs I have to see how they are held in. I always thought they just sort of popped in and out but then most of the ones I ever see do not have them so hard to be 100% sure how they are. Shoot I don't even remember if the M I have has one but do know at least one H does

The bottom "rung" on the main grill, the rung just below the rectangular opening, is separated in the middle. For the grill insert to work as described it would seem the ends of the bottom rung would need to attached such that the rung is continuous from right to left. There is no indication/evidence of this bottom rung having been broken or that the two ends were ever attached. What am I missing here?

That bottom rung is supposed to be continuous all the way. If yours is not, someone has been there with a hacksaw or pair of tin snips. You need to either hunt for a grill that is complete, or get the repair kit. I think oemtractorparts has them.
