Mechanical TA Troubleshooting Guide

Hey, can you verify these mechanical TA modes of failure?

1. Does not move with TA lever back = ramp and rollers are shot
FIX: Install rebuilt TA unit or rebuild existing unit, requires double split

2. Moves with TA lever ahead or back, but does not change speed, shifts easily, freewheels down hills = TA clutch is shot
FIX: Replace TA clutch, and throwout bearing if necessary, requires single split at bell housing.

3. Moves with TA lever ahead or back, but does not change speed, difficult to shift, does NOT freewheel down hills = TA clutch badly out of adjustment, or TA throwout bearing shot
FIX: Try adjusting TA clutch to spec. If that doesn't work replace TA throwout bearing.

What about moves with lever ahead or back and speed changes. Hard to shift with lever ahead but shift ok with lever back. Adjusted to specs by the book but still hard to shift with lever ahead?

Then you need to shorten the short ta adjustment rod a little. Be sure not to go too far or you will get a "double shift" when releasing your clutch. If youdo; then lengthen about 1/2 turn untill it quits

Pins and clevices worn on the linkage. Adjust TA link to release the TA clutch earlier (just after the master clutch disengages) Repairing the wear is a good idea as well.

Add to #3: lever broken or missing pivot pin on TA pressure plate. Also possible lining failure on clutch disk and pieces doubled up not allowing release of the clutch.
