i need a piston for my tractor somebody shot it ful of either and broke top ring lands is any other superm 400s etc. have a flat top zero deck piston piston that could be made to work? can you shave a dome piston off and make it a flat top zero deck piston? it has a 4in. bore with a little combustion chamber dish in it what do md pistons look like any advice would appreciated, can you get parts for this tractor anywhere?

None of the American diesels will work in that engine, that I do remember, but why it was I dont remember. I got lucky on the one I had, I found a guy who had some B450 parts, but he has now passed away. I was pointed in the direction of a forum that was some help, but Ive long since lost the bookmark. Sorry I cant be more help. (Oh, the rod and main bearing I had to have made, the guy at my local Napa was able to order them for me based on the part #.)

I had a B450 back in the 1970's. Parts were hard to get back then for that tractor. The bore and stroke were the same on the American and British 264 diesels. I was going to put new sleeve set in my B450 once but could not find a set. I pulled the pistons out and compaired them side by side with D264 pistons from a 400 diesel. They were the same size around and from top to bottom but the wrist pins were lower on the American piston. One IH machneic back in 1975 told me to change the rods from the 400 Farmall diesel and put the rods and pistons from a American 264 diesel and it would work. Told me he did it. I never tryed it just put new rings on my old pistons.

I am guessing they are but only guessing from what I can remember. I still have the parts book somewhere if I can find them for the B450 and my old SMD so could look up the parts numbers to see if they are the same. I had a B450, SM and a SMD at the same time back in the 70's and the B450 would walk away from the M's. It was also better on fuel than the SMD but was hard to start. From what I can remember they did use the same rod bearings.

I think that Steve Smith in Mayfield KY had a B450 in his salvage yard not long ago. 270-247-2219. Steve runs a IH salvage yard, sells new and used IH tractor parts, also runs a tire and repair shop. He might be able to give you some information.
