Hard shifting, rolling resistance - IH 300 Utility

Just acquired a 1956 300 Utility that has a non-working TA. It seems unusually hard shifting, although there is no gear grinding when putting it in gear. There seems to be some rolling resistance or drag because it is not easy to get rolling in fifth, and if stopped on a slight incline with the clutch depressed, just popping the transmission into neutral will allow the tractor to roll. The PTO is also always running. Does anyone have an idea what would cause the hard shifting and rolling resistance?

It has everything to do with that Ta
I know the TA doesnt work but pull the TA back when you shift gears. I have a 560 that is the same way. You hardly get it out of gear. My TA was out of ajustment. Im no TA expert but thats where I would start looking.

The TA is out of adjustment.

Even if it's "not working" the TA clutch needs to release at the same time the main clutch releases, or you can't shift it.

PTO running has nothing to do with the problem. It's a completely separate issue.

I'm a little confused about the "rolling on a slight incline" observation. I would expect a tractor to roll down a slight incline with the transmission in neutral. Am I missing something?

Even if the low side pf the TA slips under load it may still grab enough to cause shifting problems. If the TA clutch is not releasing then the tractor will not roll in the opposite direction of what gear it is in when the clutch pedal is depressed. Putting the transmission in neutral will allow it to roll.

Iagree with owen that exactly whats going on,if you try ajusting the t/a side of the cluch linkage you might solve the problem but it also might make it worst, good luck

Thanks to all who replied. I"ll try to adjust the TA and see if that does it. Anyone know the best way to remove recalcitrant pins from TA linkage? I"ve been spraying Liquid Wrench on this for a few days and tapping with hammer to no avail. Looks like two of the pins have no retaining split pins, and don"t need any because they are rusted in place.

I meant that the tractor should roll when on a slight incline, but doesn't with clutch depressed. Only popping transmission into neutral will allow rolling.

That's a sure sign the TA clutch isn't releasing.

It's also a sign that your ramp and roller mechanism is okay. If your ramp and rollers were shot, the tractor would roll when you pressed in the clutch, and it would shift EASY.

You mentioned the TA doesn't work... HOW doesn't it work?

1. Does the tractor stop?
2. Does the tractor not change speed?

You may be able to fix everything with a simple adjustment if the problem is #2.

Heat the pins red (and avoid the clevis) then let it cool before moving it.
Use better pins, or grade 8 bolts insted of the pins to reduce slop from worn pins. Jim

Moving the TA lever seems to have no effect. It would be great if adjustment was all it needed to function. I haven't been able to get the linkage apart yet, but I'm anxious to try adjusting it. Thanks for the information.
