i just bought a 1938 farmall f12. serial number on tractor and engine match but engine has ha5 next to it. anyone know what that means?

Charles, If it is 1938 it will be a F-14 not 12
are you sure it is not FAS is it before or after the # All 12 and 14 have FS before the serial#

Serial numbers for Jan 38 start at 122617, F14 starts at 124000 so it could be possible

I also have a 1940 Farmall A with HA5 after the serial number. I've wondered what it means. Hopefully someone can tell us.

HA after the serial number stands for High Altitude in the F series, available in 5000ft. or 8000ft. The tractor was equipped from the factory with a 5000ft High altitude set of pistons. These higher compression pistons were necessary to burn kerosene at those altitudes.

Here are the serial numbers of my F-14. The '4' on the engine looks like it was stamped rotated 45deg anti-clockwise, then corrected. About as neatly done as a Ford Model T!:

thanks for all of the comments and info. the serial number reads - FS123852 - on both engine and tag on tank support. the engine also has ha5 after it so it reads - FS123852 HA5. previous owner told me it has a gear put in it that makes top speed go to 3 mph. maybe HA = high altitude and 5 = change in final drive gear. what do you think? by the way, this is one of the last f12's made before production stopped. about 90 from the last one made.

2.25, 3, 3.75 mph is standard 1, 2, 3, gearing for a 12. Transmission codes used on the F14 are stamped on the back of the transmission case and are F,K,L,M,X,Z

(quoted from post at 20:05:02 10/27/10) Do you know what the transmission codes signify?
Thanks
Adrian

code 1st 2nd 3rd rev (speed in miles per hour)
F 2.27 2.98 3.84 2.28
K 2.27 3.81 6.6 2.28
L 3.25 5.5 9.58 3.25
M 2.27 2.98 6.3 2.28
X 3.25 4.25 5.5 3.25
Z 3.25 4.25 9.58 3.25

thanks a lot "36F30." i took your information about the high altitude and removed the spark plugs and rolled engine over to check. all 4 cylinders have the stepped pistons. 3/4 of piston head on left side has got a flat raised step of about 0.25" inch high and the last 1/4 of piston head on the right side is lower. definitely matches the "HA5" as high altitude with having the higher compression pistons to match.
the f12 doesn't run yet as needs an ignition tune-up, but do i have to do anything with the timing on the F4 magneto cause of the high compression pistons? keep the timing adjustment lever on the retard side?
by the way i learned quite a bit and many thanks for your help.

Timing and starting procedure is exactly the same, she's just got more pop at lower altitude. Follow the timing and starting procedure by the book or she will kick the snot outta you. Many F series got high dome pistons during overhauls. I don't find many with original flat tops. Cool thing about yours is it's supposed to have em. High altitude narrow tread (HAN) F20/30's are very desirable. They didn't need to make a narrow F12 because of the axle set up. Good find.
