Best way to take the wander out of a front end..

What's the best way to take the wandering out of the front end of a tricycle Super H? When you run down the road it tends to have the "wiggles". I've got an H and M that run perfect down the road, but this one worries me a little in 5th. Disregard the handle, I'm half red and half oliver green. Mom's side IH, Dad's Oliver!!! The different types are parked beside each other in the barn, but there aren't any fights. Just don't try to park a JD in there!!

A few years ago a friend of mine who used to pull 560's was talking about this.He said a simple way was to run one tire a few pounds lower on air than the other. Don't know if it works or not. Otherwise check out the gears in the steering gear case. Some of them can be turned 180 deg.or flipped over I think to wear on new teeth.

Our H used to "wiggle" ended up replacing the front wheel bearings and tightening the spindle nuts to spec, and putting the front tires back on with new bolts, was fine for 20 years after that.

My SH wobbled alot. Couldn't run in 5th at top speed. It seems mine was all wore out. I started by replacing the u joints in the steering column under the hood, that helped but not good enough. Next I replaced the sector gear in the top of the front bolster. That helped a little more but not good enough. Next I replaced the front wheel bearings, races, and seals. That got it a little better. I can now run WOT in 5th. I still have a little bit of a wobble left and have diagnosed it to the bushings in the front bolster. I have found the parts and as soon as I get the time and money I'll replace those to. Do a search in the archives and you'll find everything on what and how to fix it.

In my experience, the little ball bearing on the front end of the steering shaft is often a culprit. It's easy to change, and not expensive.

Take the hood off, and see if the universal joint in the steering shaft is worn. That's another easy fix.

Front wheel bearings can cause wobble, as well as worn bushings in the front bolster.

I have just finished my H with new parts some not need to be changed replaced sector, and steeringshaft, ujoints, removed one front wheel at a time, lower tire pressure, raised tire pressure, changed every replaceable part in the upper bolster.my problem is now cure, everyone has its or there own cure. john

That reminds me of The IH B450 we had, it got to the stage when it was too scary to go into fifth gear. We replaced the drag link ends and it was perfect after that. Of course yours will be somewhat different if it is a tricycle front end, but any amount of play in a ball joint in the steering can cause that.

You're going to find that it's a combination of multiple factors.

1. Wear in the worm gear.
2. Wear in the top and bottom bushings.
3. Wear in the U-joint.

The gears are extremely costly, but the bushings are affordable. Usually you can turn the gear 180 degrees on a Super H and find a new sector.

Heck, you may take the top off the gear case cover and find that the nut has come loose. It may be that simple.

I had to do the beer can shim trick with the sector gear on my Super H. The vertical shaft was also worn some.

The wobble is a direct result of worn out upper AND lower bushings in the bolster. The ONLY way to get rid of the wobble is to replace those bushings, and you may even need to have the worn areas on the shaft built up and turned down.

Worn out u-joints and steering gears will cause excessive play in the steering, but those worn items DO NOT cause the wobble.

Thanks everyone. It's a good ole tractor, just doesn't feel safe going down the road. I can't believe the M I have that came from our family and my uncles beat up on goes straight down the road, but it does. Maybe it was redone at some point.

The nut was loose on my 400. It was still a little sloppy after I tightened it so I took the gear off and turned it 180 deg. It drives like a new one.
