Farmall A, Identification Help

I inherited my granddads Farmall model A tractor, I remember driving it when I was a little boy. He got sick and it sat in the weather for over 10 years. In the last 2 years I have moved it to a shop and had help getting it running again. But we have no idea what year it is or any other info about it. How do I find out this info? Where do I start?

The serial number is the best place to start. It should be on the left seat mounting frame. You can then look up the serial number on the research section on the left side of this site to determine the year model.

Chuck, should be a serial # on right seat bracket. If not get us a casting code, raised numbers and letter on all cast part of your tractor. It may be like this 1*01*T than we can help from there. oldiron29

B has the same engine and transmission and rear gears. B has long left axel housing. B has a tricycle front, either single or dual wheels.

Serial number is stamped on a plate on the inside of the left hand seat bracket.

On an "A" the front and rear wheels are about the same distance apart, A "B" Has a narrow front and a wide rear.

The pictures show an A rear which is the narrower of the 2 and a B rear end which is the wider one. On the early As the serial number tag is below where your feet sit when driving it I have an A like that also the serial number can be found on the left side of the block close to the front of the engine just below the head. Also the A has a wide front end and a B has a narrow front

I agree with all of the rest--- but one thought popped into my mind. If it would happen to be a 1939 model--- the first year of production--- the serial # id tag would be below the clutch and brake pedals, fastened to the piece of tinwork that covers the brake and clutch pedal linkages. It is plainly viewable from a standing position in front of the pedals. Justg a thought. They only put it there on 1939 models.

Ah see you agree with mew and the A I am sort of rebuilding has the tag right where you say it is but when I am done it will no longer be an A but it will be a BA

Hey guys, thanks for your help, I have attached a photo and from what everyone has posted it looks Like I have an A model for sure. This pic was taken in Oklahoma, at my granddads house over 10 years ago when the tractor was still running. The tractor is currently in Houston being worked on by my friend. He did find the tag you are talking about under the seat but it has been painted over several times so he has to try and clean it without damaging it to get me the ID number. Should I look at anything else? I just want to know the year and what ever info is available.
