IH serial numbers

Does anyone know why the serial numbers for H"s starts at 501? Why didn"t the numbers start at 1 or even 100? Seems like 501 is an odd number to start with.
Thank you

Basically it is because IH and all the rest of the manufacturers learned early on that all of their potential customers were scared to death of low serial numbered machines. The customers figured that if the serial number was low, then that machine had not been on the market very long, and thus was un-tested and prone to failure very quickly. Thus IH used 501 as the beginning serial number for ALL new models.

Don't know the answer. F14, SA, Louisville SM, SMTA are a few I can think of now that didn't Start with serial # 501. Several tractors in the 6 tees and later started with a serial # higher than 7000.

That also falls in with another production related item. When setting up a production line, early units are produced and then sent off to do testing etc. Then changes are made to the tractor, to the assembly line etc. Problems on the line always reflect back to engineering. Reserving the first "500" for internal use would not be surprising at all. I usually started mine (electronics) at 1,000 for production units.
