SM Belt Pulley Assembly

The belt pulley assembly was removed from my SM when I got it. I do have it, they PO took it off and put it in a box. When I moved it I didn't see anything wrong with it, it seemed to turn smoothly and didn't look like it had any other major problems (well, at a quick glance) so I'm wondering why some one would remove it?

I could see removing the pulley it's self when it's not in use but to take the whole thing off?

The only thing I can think of is I think this tractor had a loader on it at one point and maybe it interfered with that.

The reason I ask is I'm getting ready to put a remote valve on this machine and figured I might put the put the assembly back on to get the hose routing right.

Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if there was a common reason for pulling these guys off. I really don't plan on using it but I think the tractor looks more complete with it on there verse the home made steel plate that's in it's place.

Thanks,

K

I know on the Super MD's it can be difficult/impossible to remove
the starter without removing the belt pulley unit. I would hazard a
guess that if it wasn't needed once it was removed it wasn't worth
wrestling back in there. I think on a stage 1 you cannot remove the
starter with it installed, on a stage two things are just a little
different and you can (or so I've found). Sam

Maybe the PO wanted to reduce weight for pulling? Get a new gasket, put the 2 long bolts in the pulley drive BEFORE placing the unit under the gas tank (speaking from experience) and have a helper to assist in positioning it.
I agree, it adds to the look of "completeness" for your machine.
Good luck.

I agree with the other posts. I believe many of these were removed to save on weight for the pulling guys. I believe the gearbox is about 100 lbs, and the cast iron pulleys are around 40 lbs.
I have have had three tractors that have the factory delete plate on them. I believe they were ordered that way from the factory.
I also own a late "53-"54 SMD. I have an extra drive unit that I will be installing too in the near future. So note taken about the bolts. I agree the tractor does look more complete with the pulley. Good Luck.

I took the belt pulley attachment off all three of my tractors as they are constantly in the way when you work around the tractors. Just made a nice cover in their place. So easy to take a peek into the trans without them on there also.

Hmm, well I doubt it had anything to do with pulling, just doesn't fit the PO's MO. That and it's a wide front and like I said, I'm pretty sure it had a loader on it at one point.

The bit about the starter makes sense as the starter was rebuilt not that long ago.

I guess I'm a little torn now on whether to put it back on or not now. I doubt I'll ever use it, I've got pulleys on my A and BN.

It's going to be a pain to route those lines around the assembly, so it's either keep it simple now or deal with it some day when I clean up and paint the tractor.

This may be a reach, but perhaps the previous owner had a creeper gear or overdrive in place of the belt pulley. Before he sold the tractor he may have removed that item to use on another tractor or sell by itself, and just never put the belt pulley back on.
