Rear main seal retainer

Got the retainer off to replace rear seal on my MD.The top half of the retainer looks wavy around where the gasket goes, but the "waves" are equal on both sides. In other words, the retainer surface does not make total contact with the back end of the motor. The surfaces of where the two halves meet are not totally flush either. Is this the way it was made, or should I look for another retainer?

It was probably overtightened and warped. If it can be resurfaced I would, if it is more than .010" warped I would get a different one. Jim

Get a 400 or 450 rear retainer they are made of cast and will not warp and they take the new neaprine seal. Mine was the same way got one from bates and it was in worst shape than the one I had. This is a very commmon problem with the MD,s

Thanks for reply. I've never heard of this possibility. Where would you get this retainer?
How is this type seal installed? Sorry, not familiar with this setup.

Its a 2 piece synthetic rubber lip type seal.
IH started putting them in D264 engines during 400 production. They sold a package for installing the retainers and seal on previous engines. Package contained instructions on dulling the groves in crankshafts that were for felt seals. Seal could be damaged by the sharp edges on groves. Like about everything on those engines a new type seal is not cheap.
