How common is it for a 310 engine to slobber engine oil out the exhaust pipe while ideling under no load for a few hours. There is very little blow by and the engine sound good holding 40 lbs of oil pressure at idle. While running just some engine oil running down the outside of the exhaust pipe. All replys appreciated

It would be unusual for a D310 not to do that under those conditions. It is not oil that you are seeing. It is a mixture of some unburned fuel, some condensed water vapor that resulted from the combustion of the fuel, and carbon particles to make it black.

Yup, very common. It does help a lot if you can get lighter fuel with higher cetane numbers. We used to have customers switch to straight number one fuel in cold weather and that made a lot of difference. Some are concerned about the lubrication of pump with lighter fuel but I can't say I ever saw it become an issue. Fuels are different now days though. I'm not a big believer in additives but that might be an answer depending on what the additive adds. Of course, the higher compression pistons released for service help more than anything.

Thanks guys. The engine had been sitting for a few years when I bought it. Gonna find something hard to pull and give it a workout.
