450 vs. 460

Was reading another post a page over, saw someone say a good 450 would outwork a 460. I've heard similar talk before, anything to it? What's the weight and HP differences?

Remember that the 450 descended from the M and the 460 I believe is a descendant of the H. Don't have any HP numbers and have never driven either one but I believe every word of it.

The 460 was poorly received in this area when they came out. They either got traded or got reduced to secondary status (instead of primary tractor) if the farmer could afford to keep it plus buy another tractor.
In defense of IH (and the other mfg's back then) it was a bit of a crap shoot back in the 1950's in terms of developing a tractor in terms of features and horsepower that would be relevant to the farmer/ customer. Ford set itself back permanently from the days of N series dominance when it did not adequately address the need for a high horsepower row-crop tractor until 1968.

Although the drawbar horsepower is close to the same, the Farmall 450 is a much bigger and heavier tractor than the Farmall 460 weighing about 1100 pounds more shipping weight with no ballast. The 460 will work along with the 450 on light work but in real heavy tillage work the 450 with its much more torque, cubic inches, and weight and will keep going while the 460 is just thinking about it. The Farmall 560 is more the equivilent of the 450.

Doesn't need to be a good 450 a tired one will do.
450 281 cubic inch
460 221 cubic inch
We owned both in the 1960's. Mark

I have run both, but more hours and harder work on a 450. It definately has more torque or lugging power. However, the question in the other thread was if it would handle a baler. Type of baler was not specified, but on a small square baler, it really doesn't take that much to run one and the 460 would be good in all but the most severe cases.

A good 450 with m&w or firecrater pistons at 57 hp will smoke a 460. Pound for pound they will out work a 560. 560 had better hydraulics though.
The 460/560 is the tractor IH never should have built.

the 450 definitly will not do the same work in 1 day as the 560. the 560 was a pretty good tractor and easy on fuel. it basicaly was built from the w6, and 450 .talking about both tractors as standard factory tractors.

I have put many bales through a New Holland 273 Hayliner behind a 460 Farmall. I could not believe how easy the 460 was on fuel.

I do know where there is a stock 560 Farmall that will keep up with a 730 John Deere.

The problem with the 460 was that IH either marketed it as a replacement for the 450, AND/OR, farmers saw the "4" and thought it was the next step up. "460 is more than 450..."
