Well I have 2 of the 4 pistons back into the engine now and so far the used rings I have used are with in the 0.010-0.018 spec so if all goes well the next one I steal out of the other engine will be also. Have to pull another piston to get another top ring for the next cylinder I'm doing. Sure wish I could get by with out using a new head gasket but not likely but do have what looks like a good metal one that I might try an old trick on just to see if it works ya I'm being as cheap on this one as I can be

Hi. Of course it is always best to use a new gasket, but I have had to use the old one several times over the years. the metal gaskets if gently cleaned up and then spray painted with at least 3 coats of aluminum spray paint from a can will seal up normally without a problem. In the 50s this was the factory method of puting head gaskets on flat head chrysler engines and this method has been used to an advantage by me for 47 years of repairing farm equipment. Hope this helps you.

Hey that is what was done way back in the 30s when a person had to do with out but still needed to get the job done and in the 40s when the military got 99% of the stuff because of the war so it worked then so why not now. I call it recycling to the max LOL

I don't have the paint but have copper coat and over the years I would clean one up real good. Then stick it in the oven at around 200 for an hour or so maybe a tad high heat and let it sit and cool that way it expanded a little bit then copper coat it and give it a go. Most gaskets I'll be using silicone gasket marker for them. Now ya if I was dong this for some one other then my self I would get new gaskets but this is a play toy project

Need to post some pictures of it once you get the front ends changed out. sounds like a need one and like that you want to use it in the hay fields when its done.

I'll probably take a few pictures today of what things look like right now so then when done I can post more just to give you guys an idea of how bad or good this tractor is or was

Well I do not have any aluminum paint in a spray can but do have it in brush on so have the head gasket hanging right now with one coat of it waiting for it to dry then will paint it again let dry then paint both the head gasket and block and head and tighten it down and cross my fingers does that sound about right?? or should I do something a tad different??

You are doing fine and similar to the copper coat when the engine comes up to operasting temperature the aluminum will bond to the block and head and fill in all the small imperfections on the surfaces. Years ago i use to hate removing a head from these engines because they really bond together. If you have the time let me know how this repair comes out. good Luck and thanks for your replies.
