M on propane

My Dad has a M on propane and he thinks the regulator/heat exchanger is bad. If he runs it on vapor can I bypass the heat exchanger and mount an external regulator? If I need to rebuild the regulator, any ideas where I can get a kit for it?

Mine was using a forklift regulator by impco. You can find them on ebay for 25-50 bucks. I think the parts to rebuild one is like $100 vs buying a forklift one for 25-50.

Just search on "Wardner propane" for my experience with my W400LP. Your best deal is to buy a used Ensign regulator on eBay. Create an eBay alert and you should have one in about a month for around $40 total. Or you could just buy a new Impco on eBay for about $20 more. Do you want to spend the time and money replumbing the Impco?

The Impco and Ensign are built the same with the vaporizer and regulator as one unit. Hot water goes in and out. Liquid (or vapor) LP goes in and vapor comes out and is sent to separate LP carb.

If you want to know what a Impco looks like, go to eBay. Will an Impco work on a Farmall? I can't guarantee that but I don't see why it wouldn't. Last spring I replaced an Impco on my 8000 lb Clark forklift. It has a six cylinder engine with a similar displacement.

If you are in a hurry go with the Impco. If not, wait till an Ensign regulator pops up on eBay. Chances are the listing will throw in the carb as well but I don't think they ever wear out.

I use the word "regulator" because that is the nomenclature that IH uses. Other people call them vaporizers.

The ensign's are kind of rare. here's a picture of an impco on my M prior to being converted back to gasoline.
