340 utility wiring problem

The wire from the negative side of the coil to the distributor got pulled out and I can"t see where it was attached. When I took the cap off all I found was the wire end that used to be crimped onto the wire from the coil laying in the cap, but I can"t see where it was connected. Is it just grounded? My system is 12 volt. Thanks

Not sure what you mean, but the wire goes from the (-) terminal on the coil to the side of the distributer. There is supposed to be a bolt and nut there. Do you mean that bolt some how got pulled out?

No, the bolt did not pull out. There isn't one. There is a rubber grommet on the wire to allow it to through a hole to go into the distributor and seal. Does it hook to the same terminal the condenser hooks to? I mean the wire from the negative side of the coil.

The bolt connects to the spring on the points and the coil wire -- all three in one connection. Look at the parts section of www.caseih.com and you can see what you need, or rig yourself. Since you found something in the cap, sounds like the bakelite shield over the points and condensor is missing -- it keeps out most of the dust and moisture.

I think what I found was the end of the wire coming from the coil. If I crimp it back onto wire and connect it to screw the condenser and spring from the points is hooked to all should be good, right? Thanks

Are you saying there are two holes in the case? One for the wire and one for the bolt that holds the points spring and the wire for the condenser?

If this is the case, either it is not an IH distributor or someone has fudged something and drilled an extra hole for the wire for reasons unknown. The correct connection is to have that wire attach to the bolt on the outside of the case. If the wire comes through a hole and connects to the same bolt on the inside, it should be electrically correct, but anyone who opens it up and looks at it is going to scratch their head and go "Huh?" (The bolt is not grounded--it passes through a plastic or fiber insulator so that it does not ground to the case.)
