Farmall C or Super C???

Got a bit of a mishap here? I bought a Farmall C-series tractor. It's a 1951 model, it has the 123cu in engine, and the bigger tires, but no disk brakes.. It has a wide front end and an aftermarket three-point hitch, it's a sweet setup. It has Super C decals on in, but what is it!!!!! It doesn't have the serial plate on the seat bracket.. Is it a morph for 1951?

All of the C's and Super C's had the touch control hydraulics. If it has disc brakes it's almost definately a Super C, band brakes it's a C, or at least the rear end is. AG

Yeah, it has touch control.. To my understanding 1951 was a transition year and c'c and super c's were both made that year.. It looks different than a regular c, more balanced

Also my tractor took a Super c grill because a regular c grill was too small. just the brakes issue have me confused

Give us the casting numbers off the engine, torque tube, hyd reservoir and the rear end (month*day*year, (number*number*letter). Although the front appears to be a Super C, it could have a SC radiator and engine on it, with the proper brackets to raise the gas tank. If the casting numbers are more than a couple of months or so apart, it may be a C from the engine back, along with the wide front. Tire size is not an indication as at least 3 sizes were offered on both. Someone on here may be able to tell what year the engine serial gives, so post it also, along with the casting number.

Another identifying item are the brake and clutch pedals - if they are straight and not curved to be closer to you as the operator it is a straight C. The Super C has curved back pedals. I believe both had touch control units unless they were factory deleted by the purchaser, Hal.

Dad had both straight Cs and Super Cs and all had touch control. Earliest was a '49 and latest a '54. Never saw either model without it... one of the handiest things they ever built on a small row crop tractor.

Hi Matt: If you have more then 3 or 4 changes that don't agree with major casting date code, you have a tractor from used parts. C had straight foot pedals. SC had about 20 degree bent back at contact point on tranny top plate. (easyier for short legs to touch pedals) Radiator on SC was taller which required higher placement of gas tank over touch control so full length of top was same heigth. Most SC with taller radiator had water pumps. On C water pump was extra cost item so most did not have them. Difference in heigth of front grill was added right near hole for hand crank. (about 1 & half inch taller) Internal the SC had larger cylinder bore by 1/8 inch. 113 cu to 123 cu. IHC offered at least two type pistons. Low comp for early distalite fuel and normal and hi comp above 5,000 foot. (most had normal comp pistons. Many had M&W power pack pistons at 1st major overhaul during 1970's to late 1980s.. Decal on front of hood often does not match various used parts used.. Even with swapped parts, it can still be a good tractor if some reasonable care was used in taking care of it.. hope this info helps some. Don't get too picky if it runs good. Just enjoy using it. Production started about March 1948. I have the 584 C built and there is about 6 mo spread on casting date codes with some as early as Sept 1947.. but didn't get to asembly line untill late March 1948.. ag

.. forgot disk brakes for Super. Factory did not always start or stop using certain pary just because the model changed. There were 3 "stages" of changes for the super M tractors regarding important changes. Minor changes often took place on a bit of a random method.. they did try and paint all of them the same color Red.. ag..

Some Cs were built in 47 i have worked on them. On a used tractor there can be some many changes over the yrs its realy hard to determine just what has been changed. As I-H did early tractors of any model had small changes after production started.

"The hy system could be deleted seen one at a show no hy system."

Very true, I"ve seen a pulling tractor with the hyd. system removed. Probably could have ordered a tractor new from the factory without the hydraulics. What I ment to say was that lack of hydraulics on a C or Super C really wouldn"t help identify if the tractor is a C or Super C.

Hi gene bender: I would like to ask you: What do you call "built in 1947?" Are you talking regular Production or "test" models? If your saying regular production, how do you know. Not trying to degrade your comments, just wondering because I see and read this every once in a while. So clue me in as to what the IHC factory did. WE got the 6th Farmall MD sent out to dealers but there were engineer test units built befor our regular production sent to dealer. Our history on the 6th MD is the type info I am wondering about on your 1947 Farmall C. Not that this changes the fact that it is still a nice tractor. I would think that WW-2 influanced production to fealers because for 3 or 4 years after the war, the home economy boomed. Production to consumers was red-hot. Take care. ag..

I have a "1947" C it has all november(Q)1947 casting date codes with the exception of the touch control,March 48,R, date code. PTO casting is "X" date code and fast hitch is off of a 53 SC. Fast hitch tool box still has the SC serial # on it. Yes my C has a fasthitch on it. Obviously these last 2 components were added later. Serial # is 1803, original seat and tool box was noticed up in the rafters at the last minute, and motor is 1844. These are the closest tractor/engine serial #'s I've seen since I started paying attention to that a couple years ago.

The first Farmall C was built on January 20, 1948. By that, I mean the first production ttractor (#501) came off the assembly line on that day. Serial 1803 was built in March.
