Hi everyone name is Brit and I have a 1948 Farmall H With A Dead Magneto Whats The Steps In Changing It As I Have A Rebuilt One To Put On It Is The Same H4 Magneto
Thanks

Actually, pretty simple. Take the cap off to note the position of the rotor. Leave wires on the cap (unless you are going to replace that also). Remove the ground wire on the side of the current mag. There are 2 bolts on the base on the block end opposite the cap, one at the top, and one at the bottom. Remove the bottom bolt, then remove the top bolt. Slide mag out.

Clean the old gasket off the block. place new gasket on the new mag, and with the cap off, orient the rotor on the new mag to the same position as the old one (this should case the drive slots to line up). The mag should be in the same position as the old one. Replace bolts, replace ground wire, and put cap with the wires back on.

finished.

Just did one 2 weeks ago this way. PS, you didn't say if the new mag had new cap and rotor, but best if you use the new parts.

Tom has decribed the procedure very well for changing the mag. One more tip don't move the engine while the mag is off and the new mag is installed. Hal

Just to add to Tom's clear and excellent advice, it couldn't hurt to turn your motor over so that it's set up at TDC on the compression stroke on #1 begore you remove your existing mag -- you can verify with the timing marks, by checking the top of the #1 piston, and by checking that the rotor is pointing to your #1 plug wire -- which will leave you set up for final timing of the mag.

I have to add, like said, turn to tdc number one but make sure impulse has just snapped or when you pull mag it will unwind and you may wonder , now where the heck was it.
