H with shutters - x1 engine code

I helped a friend try to start the 1948 H he inherited from his grandad a few years ago. The tractor has been sitting in a lean-to on the back of the barn for 4 years. In checking a few things over I noticed that it had working shutters on the radiator, but the engine code was an x-1, which I always thought meant a straight gasoline engine. There is no evidence that it ever had any of the other distillate accessories--- starting tank, etc. on it. The tractor was sold new in south central Indiana--- his grandad bought it new--- so why the shutters? Just wondered.

They were always an extra-cost item which you could fit if desired, maybe for faster warm-up in the morning. They were a standard fitting on distillate or kerosene fueled tractors.

Athol is correct. Farmalls often run cool when not worked hard. The bypass port around the thermostat is too large. A shutter system would help performance in cool weather. (especially with a Heat Houser on it!) Jim

Thanks, guys! That makes sense. The only ones I'd seen with shutters prior to this one always had signs of having the other distillate/kerosene accessories.
