super m belly pump

Pumps located inside the belly housing will interchange, although some updates or changes were made over the years of production. Around the time IH started putting 12 inch clutches in M tractors, that also were used in SM tractors a change was made. Change was made in housings or reservoir casting at the front to clear the bigger clutch. SM housing ends in a suffix on the casting # of EE if I remember correct. Whole unit change from M to SM would only be from late M tractors or one with a replacement housing.

Would this mean that all M and SM pumps will fit in Ms up to early 52 with the smaller clutch, and Only late production M and SM pumps will fit in Late M and SM tractors? Jim

Yes, if you purhased a liftall attachment for a M in say 1952 it could be the same type used in a SM no matter the year M. At the start of 12 inch clutches they were Rockford. Later IH sold other types for replacements. One person posting on this site before said they were able to grind enough on the early reservoir housing to clear the bigger clutch. Never needed to try it to see. If getting a back plate and pump to use in any of the tractor reservoir housings, I would try for a late 1947 or newer one.
