SMTA Axle Clicking

I was out mowing roadside with my old tractor and, when idled back or coasting down a hill, kept hearing a clicking sound from LH axle. Checked wheel hub to axle clamps bolts, wheel weights bolts, and tire rim to hub bolts - -everything is tight. Greasing axle outboard bearing didn't change anything.
Suppose its the outer axle bearing gone?
I haven't looked at manual yet - -can it be changed by removing wheel and bearing retainer on end of axle housing?
Where is the TractorVet when I need him???
THANKS-In-Advance!
John

I know you checked them but I had this same thing happen on my SC and it turned out to be the wheel weights. Those bolts really need to be tight in that the weights are heavy and will want to move as the wheel rotates. I had to use a breakover to get them tight enough. Just a thought.

I'm with Bud. Recheck every bolt on wheels and weights. Usually if it is an outer bearing it will take the seal out and be leaking oil. Jack up the back of the tractor and check use a block of wood and bar to check for play in the axle.

Recheck all the bolts by loosening them & retighten, might be rusted/frozen, most likely tire rim to cast wheel bolts with cast lugs, you can slide the cap over to look in at bearing, if the wheel isnt clear in, clean axle off so dont damage seal, might try just jacking up that side & revolve wheel to check for noise.

Yes, you can replace the bearing and seal by taking the cap off and sliding it over a VERY CLEAN axle. If you greased it, it SHOULD not be the outer bearing. The grease should keep the balls from clicking against each other. When I took my H apart the whole cage was gone and the balls were just banging around in there freely and I could not hear them clicking. If you do have to get the bearing be sure to bring some grease to the dealer bc you will take it in the...well, the bearing is over $250 from the dealer. I bought mine from Bearings, Inc (a local bearing dealer in Elkhorn, WI) They were $110 each.

If it were a wheel weight loose or an axle clamp I would describe the sound as a thunk more than a click in my experience. Just my .02.

I would jack her up and do some carefull listening. Many an M has lost a cog or part of a cog on a bull gear. If it makes the click once every revolution check gear, about 6 times per rev, check bull pinion. Far as getting outer axle bearing out, if it tight on axle like it should be it is very difficult to get out as you cannot get ahold of it unless you break it up . I alway work through pto, pushing axle out of housing with outer bearing by taking off bolt and washer and then using that bolt or longer one and spacer between gears and turn it out.

This may not be related, but one thing I found on my Super A was that the nuts were bottoming out on the threads before the bolt was tight.

When I got it, there was a creaking noise coming from one wheel. Found a loose bolt, tightened it.

Next time out, it was still creaking. Checked all the bolts. All were tight.

Still creaking. This time, I noticed that a TIGHT bolt would wiggle in the hole easily.

I ended up adding 2 lock washers to each bolt to get the nut far enough away from the shoulder that it would tighten down.

So, the bolts may be tight, but not TIGHT, if you know what I mean.

The tractor salvage yard in Lyons Nebraska sold me a couple of real good one for a really good price, give those boy a caLL. 1-800-747-2170

Don't overlook the brake department. Our 450 got a brake spring wedged between the rotor & case. We even took the axle & bearings out ---only to find the rusted spring in the brakes.

make sure the clamps on the front wheels are tight also. You'd be surprised how that clicking sound can travel right through the entire tractor.
