CAN YOU DO SOMETHING TO MODIFY A 40 DEGREE SHAFT IN A DISTRIBUTOR TO MAKE IT LIKE A 22 DEGREE HAVE CHECKED AROUND CAN NOT FIND A 22 SHAFT LOCALLY

Careful modification of the stops that limit the travel, (might include silver soldering in a small chip of metal to reduce the travel) would do it.
Use the other springs as well. There should be very many of those advance units available at salvage yards. Jim

Fill the hole in shaft that limits the advance. I measure the gap between stop on cam and edge of hole and calculate how much to fill in. Far as springs, you can get by very well with the 40 degree ones as the critical thing is to limit max advance to 22 and if you hit it lucky you will get a rather gradual advance from tdc at idle to full advance at full throttle. May have to redo it once or twice to get it where you want it. But then again, it is only time, not money.
