Farmall 400 transmission capacity

If it's like the M, it will be 13 gallons. You could put 12 gal. in, and then see how close it is to the level plug, then add slowly.

Fifteen gallons, per the manual. It also goes on to say to use one quart IH TA Transmission Lubricant Additive to every four gallons of SAE-10 or 10W engine oil. I think you can use straight Hy-Tran, instead. Someone here will let us know if you can.

Hi Mike thank you. I read that the TA would only work with hytran so I am leaning toward all hytran. But any ideas will be appreciated. As it is a working tractor. John.

More than a M because the center section is also flooded. Both sections of the tractor are filled from the triangular cover opposite the gear shifter. Oil level in the center section won't stabilize for several minutes as the oil passage is through the unshielded ball bearing on the IPTO shaft.

Yep, fifteen gallons is right.

The additive the book is talking about was what we used before hy-tran was concocketed. Used it with engine oil in tractors with TA. Not available any more. It was an excellent steering gear lube and IH kept it available for many years after hy-tran was on the market just for that purpose.
