SMTA Power Steering

Does anyone know where I can look to find a power steering system for my SMTA? Also, do they work very well or is it just power assist? My SMTA has a wide front and I am exhausted when I try to move it around in my crowded shed.

I would get the Char-Lynn set up with the seperate pump unit mounts under the hood in front of the guages they work well and parts are aval . They have new ones so you dont buy a used one thats supposed to work.

OEM Tractor Parts sells everything you need new to install a Char Lynn unit on your tractor. Their contact information is www.oemtractorparts.com and phone no. 1-800-283-2122. They are located in Chenoa, Illinois. The unit they have available utilizes your engine driven hydraulic pump along with a priority valve so an additional pump, belts and reservior aren't required which should simplify the installation. Hope this helps, Hal.

Two different SMTAs with Behlen PS. You can see the priority valve in the second picture.

Both CharLynn and Behlen will give you two finger steering. Behlens were first used in 1954 on 400s. CharLynns were first used by IH in 1962 on the 504.

Complete take-off systems are offered fairly regularly on eBay. They generally go for $500 and above.

I prefer the Behlen with its awkward appearance and closer availability to the SMTA from a time perspective. They were sold as OEM and aftermarket. Not sure when the aftermarket units were first offered. The input shaft on the aftermarket unit is threaded for the steering wheel. The 400 units have a shorter shaft by several inches and are not threaded.

I know the CharLynn was available aftermarket by at least 1958. Dad bought his second JD 60 in Elkader, Ia and had the dealer install a CharLynn torque generator with a Saginaw pump before it was delivered. I would assume an IH dealer could have done the same thing to a Farmall. Dad bought the 1953 tractor and a new 227 corn picker in the fall of '58.
In the early and mid-'80s I was helping a friend with his late model stock car and several guys were using the same basic set-up on race cars.
