Farmall A Steering Box

Hello,
Sanding a 1940 A and found a hairline crack in the steering box. The crack starts on top by the grease fitting and comes towards the rear of the tractor prolly 7 inches or so all the way to where the front axle is attached. It should be ok to weld that, dont ya think? Thanks. Shawn

If done with the material Ved out, and using Ni rod or Cast compatible rod yes. A good weld is as strong as the original casting. (it must be a good weld though) Jim

I assume the steering box is still on the tractor. If not, you could
bring it to a welding shop and have it TIG (GTAW) welded with
silicon bronze filler wire. It will do a fine job, hold well, and not be
nearly as messy as stick welding.
