crankshaft (fan drive) pulley

I am rebuilding a super AV and just started prepping to paint the fan drive (crankshaft) pulley. I noticed that there is a ring or groove worn around the pulley. It looks like it might be deep enough to intefere with the seal. Has anyone encountered this? Do I have option other than buy a new pulley?

Thanks,
Sam

It is reparable with one of two methods. It can be built up and machined down (it is cast, so it needs to be done carefully, Metal spray techniques using a special fixture is best. (usually done with irreplaceable parts, this is not it)
It can be fixed with a Speedy Sleeve. A thin metal sleeve is placed over the groove and this provides a new seal surface. (usually a different seal is needed). Another solution is to place the replacement seal in a different location. A new thinner seal with the same ID-OD can make this easy. Jim

The best is get a speedy sleeve. The front cover that holds the seal doesent alow for a different placement of the new seal so the grove in your pulley is where the new seal will ride thats why the speedy sleeve.

Are the aftermarket pulleys such aas the one from OEM any good? The fifty bucks for the pulley is not my biggest concern.

Does the speedy sleeve need to be welded to the pulley or anything?

You need a speedi-sleeve. Your Napa store should have them. Hal

Thanks for the great feedback!!! I'll go to Napa for the Speedy sleeve. Do you think they will also have the new seal? I have a seal that was included in a rebuild kit.

I am assumng I will need a different replacement seal right?

Sam

Sam, If you purchase and install the speedy sleeve on the crank pulley will an original front seal work or do you need a different seal because of the sleeve increasing the OD of the crank pulley slightly? Thanks.
