1953 Farmall Super H Distributor

I recently purchased a Farmall super H. This is a tractor I originally purchased in 1961 when I was 17 years old. I left the farm in the late 60's and sold the tractor. The guy that purchased it at my sale owned the tractor for about 40 years. He died and his wife sold me the tractor. The Distributor is vertical (the cap is on top). I don't remember it being that way when I owned it. All the tractors I see have the cap pointed toward the back of the tractor.

that is an after market delco-remy distributor, fairly common add on's. most likely the factory one died and this is what was available at the time. This would be considered a correct aftermarket. You could put the factory horizontal style back on but cant see a reason if its working now, as is.

Another possibility other than what Andrew mentioned, is a hydraulic system that runs off the engine could be installed that used a vertical dist.

Even the IH distributor is aftermarket. The H came from the factory with a magneto. The vertical Delco distributor is the same one as used on Allis-Chalmers, Case, etc., so when you go to buy tune-up parts, buy them for an Allis.

However, he said it is a Super H, therefore . . .

You have an after market Delco distributor. Unlike what Rusty Farmall says, The horizontal IH distributor was factory standard equipment beginning in at least 1950 and not after market. A magneto on a Super H would be unusual.

None of the rules are hard and fast on these old tractors. My 1950 H has the vertical Delco, and it appears to have just as much age on it as the rest of the tractor, which is 100%, paint all gone, original.

With respect, I think a SH would be Magneto equipped only if ordered that way. A customer might have done so, then changed it out to delco later. Jim

As has been said the vertical Delco distributors are fairly common but IH parts books (I have seen) list only horizonal IH distributors and magnetos for both H and Super H.

IH distributor was made standard during 1949 on a H unless tractor didn't have starting or lighting or was ordered with a magneto.

My 53' super has the horizontal distibutor with battery ignition on it. I'm pretty sure this was a factory standard.
