H starter troubles

The H had been slow turning over on the starter. Last time I had it checked the guy in the shop said that one of the brush springs had been over heated and lost it's tension.

When I took it apart the spring for the ground brush was weak. Actually, the brush holder was welded to the pivot post.

The ground strap screw in the end plate wasn't dead tight, but it was not loose either.

Any ideas on why that is happening ?

BTW, does anyone happen to know how long new starter brushes are ?

If the ground brush lead is loose or disconnected, the brush will ground through the holder and pivot system (which is not insulated from ground). The metal will weld itself together and become inoperative. I don"t know the length of the new brushes. But you will need a spring either way, and getting a spring should be no issue at a auto electrical repair shop. Replacing the bushings and dressing the armature then undercutting will also perk it up. 00gauge wires to it and ground are also needed. There is also a new style clutch drive pinion that is superior to the old unit. Jim
 
I would bet that your starter gear wasn't retracting due to a bad spring and the gear just kept on spinnin off the ring gear when you were usin it. maybe??
 
Brush number is 811553 delco. Napa can cross it for you. It is one of those numbers I just happen to remember over all the years and when the young fellow in Napa could not find brushs for me I rattled off that number, he crossed it over and had a set on hand. Lucky I guess. I would agree that the brush ground lead is your problem, happened a lot over the year, just a loose screw and it will fry those springs and weld holder to post. New ground leads may be harder to find though, maybe not in your area, they are here.
