Super AV bearing cover

Should a SAV have a cover on the inside axle bearing on the left side or is this absent on purpose to attach some type of planter drive, etc? I have a howl (not the usual howl) coming from the rear end on this tractor I suspect could be a bearing issue.

If it is for a fertilizer, etc drive, it should have a "cover" with a cutout top, I think. My SA has one of those, but with it disassembled, I don't remember which side it was on, I thought it was usually on the right, not sure. It is pictured in the final drive diagram in the parts book. If you don't have one it is in the parts section of the CaseIH website. BUT, I don't know if it would howl, as that part will be turning rather slow, the same as axle speed.

If I'm looking at it right, the non-fertilizer drive has a cover, the fertilizer drive has a different open cover with a seal inside to keep the dirt out. Don't know how effective that is.

OK, thank you! The tractor was supposed to have some gear noise in the rear end and my response was "well, duh!" Some are quieter than others but they all seem to have some noise. This, however, is an intermittent, higher pitched, grinding noise fairly consistent with the movement of the tractor and gone altogether when still. I can ALSO hear the regular rear end noises. I was thinking it was that bearing since there is no cover and it is leaking grease like bad bearings tend to do. I have a spare bearing here so will look into it when I get my painting project done.

I'm replacing all the transmission bearings, along with suspect final drive/axle bearings in my Super A, and readjusting the differential and PTO gears ($$$). Curious as to whether that will quiet the transmission/final drives. I suspect most of the noise is from the differential ring and pinion. But, Gene Bender says most of the noise is silenced by replacing the front bearing in the transmission. Since I'm replacing all of them, I won't be able to confirm or deny that. Been told many times that the noise is normal, due to the "square cut" gears. My 2 C's have the same transmission, for the most part but different differentials -- they are quiet. I may or may not find out. Due to the wear on the gears, all of this might not help much.
