FARMALL A wSAMPLE on block

I recently acquired my Dads FARMALL A, on the right side of engine in front of oil filter base it has SAMPLE embossed. Can anyone inform me on what I have? Thank You

Hi: Does the block have a casting # and serial #?
Saw a serial # you posted on tractor talk. Is that the tractor serial # or engine serial #? Tractors up to 201000 used matching serial numbers. Serial you posted is later and getting near the change to SA. Just speculating that that may have something to do with it. Knowing engine cast and serial # may help

You are about the 3rd person that has asked that over the last few years -- so you don't have the only one. My guess is that it is the first block that used some different casting process -- when IH found out it was ok, they sold it. Strictly a guess. If Dave Slater or Jim Becker don't know, I doubt if anyone still alive knows. Engine serial is under the #1 spark plug. The prefix should be FAAM.

Mine isnt FAB which is on a B. Its located benind the hy lines going to the Cs hy system. Last two code is under the firing order which is not the original place on those blocks last two i can see is 3"Q" I will look with the hood off sometime to get them. As you said there are three that we know about. The unusual things is why i bought the tractor hy system works just fine.

Here is the picture oF the motor with SAMPLE

As I recall what Guy Fay once said, when IH was getting a new part or existing part from a new outside vendor, they would have the vendor cast the word "SAMPLE" into it. That effectively marked the part for additonal inspection or whatever when it came in. If the part checked out as OK, it got used. Remember that Louisville didn't have a foundry until 1949. Until then, all castings had to come from somewhere else, either internal to IH or not. The "NEW PATTERN" is probably a similar story but may have not been an outside casting.

Sounds logical. I was under the mistaken impression that IH cast all their own blocks.

I got some more #"s off the Farmall A tonight. CASTING # behind oil filter is 251069R1 ENG SER# below 1st plug is M219207 w/FAA under that. This is possibly a date code that is on rt side of motor down on bottom rt hand corner 8 21 0

8*21*O, not zero means the block was cast on Aug 21, 1945. The serial means it was cast in 1947, therefore the O becomes a Q, then everything matches.

In reference to cnks I can tell you at least 2 of the post on the farmall a sample within the past few years were my self and anouther person other than darrell and they were about the same tractor. Not sure if that makes a diff. It just seem real of that no one really can give us a real good answer did farmall not keep good records on this type of stuff or what. Darrell is my father and we plan on showing this tractor at local show with my grand dad . It would be nice to tell people when they ask us what sample means not trying to find out so we can sell it as it has been in family for years any will stay for many many more with us thanks for any help we can get
