IH 584 lost hydraulics

while cutting hay my IH584 (1978)sheared the woodruff key on the hyd.pump on the multiple control valve. I replaced the key, primed the pump, cleaned the oil basin, cleaned the intake screen, replaced the hyd. oil (6 gal.),turned on the engine and nothing happened. I have no lift,no 3pt.,no pto,no pressure. Does anyone have a solution or any idea.

Hi Jerry, make sure you have plenty of Hytran in the transmission, even over fill by 6 gal. If you can drive the tractor to somewhere that the front end is a foot or more lower than the rear end. Let engine run at fast idle (1300 RPM)while turning steering wheel left and right.
If you can't drive it to a slope then take your air gun and apply air pressure in the hydraulic filler hole while running engine at fast idle. You will have to hold the transmission dipstick in place or plug the tube.

If all that does not work, post again and I will give you the next procedure.

thanks for the information. I will try your suggestion tomorrow and let you know the results. We always love our tractors more when they are not running.

I put 45lbs.air on the filler hole, stopped up the gage hole on the transmission. Turned on the engine and turned the steering wheel at 1400 rpm. After about 10 minutes the steering tightened up and the wheels turned. Then the steering got loose again and I repeated the process until the steering turned the wheels again. I got little wheel movement but I could tell the process was working. I then tried to lift the bucket but nothing happened. I was overfilled with hytrain but I did not check it after I stopped turning the wheel. We are close but it may take something else to get the hydraulics back. Thank you for your help.jh

Hi Jerry, the following is from Bernard le mecano, who used to be on this board frequently. He had many years as an IH Mechanic.

To prime the hydraulic pump, under the filter canister, there is a pipe for the steering supply, loosen the fitting and place a container to catch the oil, start the engine and check for oil flow at the fitting. Stop engine when there is oil flow. When the pump is worn, it's harder to prime the system. Bernard le mécano

If this dosen't work then there is a problem with the suction tube or "O" rings. Is the filter correctly installed? Filter next MCV and strainer next the cover?

Thanks, I will proceed tomorrow. The filter is correctly installed and is the right one. I have prints for the hydraulics so I can locate the pipe for the steering supply. When the steering tightened up I thought we had suceeded and then the front tires started to move. But then we lost it again. I will revisit these methods again and check the oil level. I have o rings but they are thicker than the ones on the mcv valve do you know where I can find the correct ones? jh

On Sunday, you can try Ace hardware for orings. Take your old ones or have the size. They have then in a little flat plastic or metal container. TSC and orscheln carries some as well but you never know what they have in stock.

Thanks for the oring tips. I worked with orings but all I have are thicker than those in the mcv and I don't want to use the wrone part.
