farmall h with higher compression

I was looking up the serial numbers for my h which is
FBH 375479 X1. I found that it was a 51 model and it said
that the X1 means higher compression, how did the factory
make them higher compression compared to the other
ones.

pintobill, Sorry to burst your bubble here, The X1 designation means the your tractor came from the factory as a Gasoline tractor not Distalate fuel. Yes it is a little higher compression than the distalate models.
Usually flat top pistons or step pistons. I an not aware of longer or shorter rod length Though they may have been used at times. The head chamber may have been changes some from the Distalate Model though. Maybe someone else will weigh in and will have specific info
Hope this helps

Pretty much as John says the main difference is the head, larger combustion chamber, valves are slightly different as well. Externally the manifold and jetting in the carb are different as well.

Combustion chamber is noticeably larger when compared to the gas versions. I do not recall the actually CC's off the top of my head though.

X1 denotes gasoline and is the lowest of three compression ratios available for gasoline Farmall's. Distilate would be a lower compression ratio and would either have no suffix after the serial numbers as it was standard, or X17 for distilate on later Farmalls, after gasoline became standard. X1B is for gasoline 5000 foot altitude and X1C is for gasoline 8000 foot altitude, both of which have higher compression ratios than your standard gasoline tractor. Of course your head or pistons may have been changed over the years, but that is what it was from he factory.
