Cracked head

Just got my 300 U engine and head back from a professional machine shop. head rebuilt, block rebuilt, started putting it back together, filled with anti freeze, come out next day and I have anti freeze on top of head? after further inspection found small crack in top of head where leaking. My first thought was shouldn"t they have found a crack in the head while at the machine shop. Second any idea"s where to get a head for a c169 engine

I would tend to agree with you, but did you request that they magnaflux as part of the re-work? Do they even offer that service?

My shop asks up front, as it is a $60 option, which I ususally say yes to........

Absolutely!

Demand your money back. Any machinist that works a cracked head needs to go back to Mexico.

No different than a so-called mechanic that will sell you a tune-up on an engine with a burnt valve/no compression.

Total waste of money to the customer and it is the responsibility of the guy doing the work to find these things.

The heads don't normally crack on top but around the valve seats. So if it was magnafluxed, they maybe never checked it on top.

I didn't specifically ask for it to be magnafluxed. I did however tell them to go through everything and if anything was in question replace it. Does 1800.00 sound right for a short block rebuild, new sleeves, pistons, mains, head rebuilt, really everything new except valve seats. But this is really not the main issue, the fact remains I need a head and wondering is this going to be a pain to find or is this head used on more than just a 300 U (cast stamp 361479-R1) I looked through the classified ads but I really don't know what I should be looking for. What other tractors used a c169 engine. Thanks for any input

why not get the head repaired since you have that much work and money in it all ready
might be as simple as stopleak or need to have it professionally welded
good luck

I'm guessing thats what the previous owner did. I ran the tractor for about two years after I bought it, figuring I would discover any major issues before I put the money into the restore, well so much for that theory, looks like previous owner peened the head and then probably added some kinda stop leak. I guessing thats why she didn't leak, I could just do that again but why start taking shortcuts, I would rather fix it right the first time, and hopefully not have to mess with it again for a long time

The owner of the machine shop just stopped out this afternoon, looked it over and apologized, made no excuses, offered to take it back off himself and attempt to pin the crack and pressure test at 60 lbs, he is going to replace all seals. If he can't pin it or have it welded he will redo another head if I can find one. I was impressed by his attitude, and really can not complain. I have my fingers crossed that it can be repaired, It looks to me that the crack runs into a bolt hole. I'll just have to wait and see.

Wow, that service and honesty is impressive, even nowadays! What is the name of this shop? It should be known so other can experience this rare phenomenon called customer service!

sounds like he is an honest man. work with him, and as long as he is fair with you, then return the favor. Good, honest machine shops are getting harder to find.

One time on a Ford V-8 rebuild, my shop had a new kid, and he put the head gaskets on backwards. You know what that does. Pretty simple, I called the owner, and he said a few choice words about the employee , then said, "bring the heads back. I'll recheck and recondition if necessary, give you replacement oil, antifreeze, and new gaskets". and wouldn't stop apologizing. I still do business with him, and will continue.

People can make mistakes. What is more important than the fact that a mistake was made, is how they deal with the mistake. I challenge anyone on this board to state that they have never, ever, ever, made a mistake on an engine or tractor........................
