Early model gas 706... runs about 20 minutes and coughs a little and then dies, starts right back up but will not stay running... but will runs fine once is cools off...

I have changed the coil, resiter, and removed fuel shut off bowl assembly caleaned it all up, removed tha carb and cleaned everyting... it does start and idle better, but has not made a differance in the dying...

Bett,
Haven't had my 706 very long, still working out the bugs myself with help from an old IH man.
Make dang sure you have good gas flow at the Carb.
Then make sure your points haven't slip. Mine has when we put new points in didn't get tight enough they moved tractordid the same thing your explaining.
Try those things first. Not much help but its a start.

Can you keep it running if you pull the choke closed a little?
My tractor needs at least half a tank of fuel to have good gas flow to the carb or it dies out on me.
Check all the simple things like good fuel flow, and go from there. Was anything done to it before it started doing this, like a head job?

You need full fuel flow for a few minutes. Get a hose and drain the gas into a gas can for a while. Sound like you have the standard rusty gas tank problem. It dies so fast when it runs out of gas that you think it is an electrical/ignition problem. Once the carb refills with gas, then it starts and runs till the line plugs off again. Sometimes you can get just enough flow it will run for 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Crank up the throttle when you do this.

I don't know if the 706 used a vented fuel tank cap or not, but for sure there has to be a way that the fuel tank IS vented, so you might try running the tractor with fuel cap removed, or at least loose, and if the tractor no longer stalls out, you have found the problem. If the 706 DOES have a vented cap, the solution is as easy as getting a new cap.
