I had my ole 44' H at a tractor show over the past weekend, a few tracor drivers came up with an idea when the park closed for the night that we would drive up across town to Mc-d's for coffee. well that went well that is my ole H had to beat me to death .. i know iknow . what i do need can any one off the top of your heads have the part numbers for the bushings and all else that i might need when i get in side . the closest dealer will have to order what i need but that way i may have an idea what im gettin in to .. that being said just how much of a job is it to do dose the whole front end have to come off ? thanks to all that can help

I'm getting ready to do this job on my 49 H. I bought the steering shaft with worm gear, the round gear for the top of the bolster shaft, and the Ujoint from yesterdays tractor store, the upper bolster rebuild kit is available from Carter & Gruenewald, just go to http://www.external_link/Search.cfm and search for part number 368097R91.

As for how much of a job it is... I couldn't tell ya yet, but it doesn't look too bad really. I'll find out in the next couple weeks when I get a chance to rebuild mine.

First do a little inspection. Start at the steering post. Make sure both collars are up against the post and set screws are all in there. Go down to the u-joint. Replace cross if it is wobbly. Continue down to worm gear and sector. Make sure that top nut is TIGHT! Make sure the front cap nut is tight. Check the center and forward shaft bushings. If you eliminate all the play in the shaft portion you are more than half way home.

Mine shook too till I realized some one had turned the wheels 180 degrees so they ran backwards. Turned them around and it made a big difference on how it acts on the road. Thought there was suppose to be stops to prevent that?

Do just as Gordo says. That may very well solve your whole problem. If not, sometimes the splines between the worm gear and the bolster shaft get worn too, then it's time to look in the parts book!

Some can and some can't do that. Those are the good ones bc you can turn the gear around to drive on a "new" section.
