Hi all,
I'm a new owner of a 1946 Farmall A. It has a magneto which functions great. It also has a starter and a 12V battery. There is no charging setup and no amp/light switch box. I simply top off the battery on a tender every once in awhile.

I'd like to add lights for pulling evening hayrides. What are my options?

I'm thinking of going 12V and getting a 60 amp ammeter. Also the mini 42amp 3-wire alternator looks promising for fit reasons, but I imagine I'll have to come up with a toggle switch separate from the magneto kill switch to excite it, right?

This is looking very expensive because I need everything... old amp box ($15 ebay), grommet ($5), light switch ($43), ammeter ($15), lights($85), light brackets($15), alternator($90-150), wiring harness($158), alternator bracket($55), alternator V-belt($10). Am I missing anything?

Is there any difference in light intensity from 12V bulbs VS 6V bulbs if I were to restore to a 6V system?

If you use the correct, #1133 bulbs, there is no difference in brightness between 6 volt and 12 volt. If you want really bright lights, you will need to go with the 12 volt conversion and some kind of aftermarket lights that will NOT look anything like the originals.

Thanks. I definitely want the tear drop style lights even if they are only 35W or so. I do have a couple 6V generators, but no mounting bracket.

What about wiring a 3-wire alternator on a magneto tractor. Do I need another toggle switch to turn off like an ignition switch so the battery doesn't drain through the alternator? What have others done in this case?
