Farmall M steering wheel

I am trying to pull the steering wheel off a 49 M and I can't get it to budge. I have removed the nut from the steering wheel and have loosened the 4 set screws that hold the collars on either side of the 'pedestal.' When I pull the wheel, it won't go anywhere. Thoughts?

Did you try a pulley puller? If that is a way to get it off you might watch out theres not a lot of rim to grap onto to get it off. might slip off

Normally, a steering wheel puller would get the job done, but if that steering wheel has not been removed in 60 to 70 years, the only way you will get it off now is to either heat the hub of the steering wheel red hot, or cut the hub with a hacksaw or cutting torch. By the way, there is no need to loosen the set screws on the collars. The collars have nothing to do with holding the steering wheel on.

There are several methods. If you are trying to remove the steering wheel from the shaft. Use some kind of penetrating oil. Then a 3 jawed puller and impact wrench works good. you may have to heat the hub of the steering wheel.
If you are trying to pull the whole shaft you will have to take apart the universal joint as the yoke is part of the shaft.
If your tractor has power steering. I don t have an answer for you other than look it over and figure it out.

Best way that we have found to remove them is to heat up the hub and then use the impact tool with a flat face. Put another small piece of iron between the tool and the hub and have at it. They have been mated for a long time and take some persuasion to move apart.

If you are not going to save the wheel, new ones can be had fo 35 dollars, Here is the 5 minute drill to remove.
Use a sawsall and cut through the center hub where the keyway is, parallel to the shaft. Insert a chisel and give it a few whacks. Slide the wheel off. Guaranteed 5 minute job.
