MD Engine Problems

My MD started missing and now slobbers oil out the exhaust and the breather pipe by the oil pan.

It starts easy and switches to diesel easy - but it smokes blue when it idles more than 10 minutes.

The valve springs are good and none of the valves appear to be bent. It does not have any water in the oil either.

Thank you!

I would guess it is diesel rather than oil out of the exhaust. Did you bleed the injectors? This MIGHT show you which one is the problem. I would guess it is dirty and not popping off right and sending raw, unburnt fuel out the exhaust.
The only thing that negates this is you saying the smoke it blue, not white. Usually fuel smoke is a little whiter. You could also smell it and it would be a dead giveaway.

Almost all diesel engines are designed to be worked hard. This one is no exception. It needs to be used to pull implements, run silage blowers, feed mills, water pumps and loads that make it feel useful. If idled it will wetstack and get slobbery on its own hood. Put it to work (unless it keeps missing on one cylinder) if it does, it will need service before heavy use. Jim

Put a heavy load behind it and pull it for about three to four hours. My old SMD use to do that also just idleing around and doing light chores. Put a 3 bottom plow or a 10 ft disc and get the motor hot and it will clean up. Might smoke like crazy for a little while untill all the slobbers get burned up.

A light blue or heavy puff? Mine will do the light stuff at times. Some work makes it better.
Make sure the pump has good oil and not overfilled with diesel too.

biggest thing is that your compression is not up to snuff.put her to work and she gets warmed up and smoke puffs go away till it cools down.also may be an injector.have one that does the very same thing that was stuck and got it loose. i know when i pull it apart what to expect. that is another example of those soaker engines that some people seam to think they run good after but not so.

Hello! off the subject but me and dad are getting ready to restore a 51 MD and would like to see if i could get some contact info on some of you MD & SMD owners. We will probably be needing some good advice and direction on our restoration. Thanks
