Thought I would post this problem/solution as I have not seen it mentioned here (i could be wrong on that, at least I did not see it)

I had a problem getting my M to start. I would depress the starter switch and it would heat up and smoke, but the starter would not turn. I cleaned all the connections till they were bright metal and this problem continued. I tried to jump from the battery to the starter and got sparks but the starter would not turn. I was befuddled as I had the starter checked TWICE, and it was fine. Well it was the starter gear was jamming and when I would pull it out unjam. Now the problem is fixed, or at least I know a remedy.

Thanks Strojny Implement, lucky to have my place less than three miles from them.

It is a common problem on older tractors, trucks, and even cars. The quick remedy on a tractor is to shut off the switch, put the tractor in gear, and rock the tractor by pushing against the rear tire. Usually you will hear a "click" from the starter, and then you are good to go. Sometimes that trick does not work, so then you get out your 3/4" wrench, loosen the bolts that hold the starter on enough so you can pull the starter back, and then you will hear the click. Tighten the bolts again and it's done. Eventually, you WILL need to replace the drive on the starter, and quite possibly split the tractor and replace the toothed ring gear on the flywheel. The ring gear is not expensive, but the work involved in getting to it can be, unless you do it yourself.

Rusty has it right. Put a clutch style starter drive in it and it will be much better if not permanently fixed. The drive looks different, but is a direct replacement for the drive with a heavy spring. Jim

Thanks for the advice. This group, as always, has saved me a ton of aggravation, money, and time. A new starter will be the next project on that tractor.

Thanks again

Bill
