A Rookie with a New Model B

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a '47 Model B and a Woods finish mower to cut grass around the house.

A couple of "softball" questions.

1) What current Manufacturer's/part numbers of oil filters are available for this tractor?

2) What current spark plugs are being used in this tractor?

3) Can I use a synthetic oil safely in this engine? What viscosity (North Texas location)?

4) This tractor has a 3 point hitch assembly. What hydraulic oil is correct for it's use?

5) Is there an online shop manual available to look at or do I just need to order one?

Thanks for your help.

For oil filters there is many to chose from. You can either have a tall or short filter.
Here is the tall filter part# you can use.
Wix 51125
Napa 1125
Fleetguard LF584
Bladwin PT70
Case IH 376375R91

Here is the short filter part #
Wix 51172
Napa 1172
Fleetguard LF618
Bladwin PT71
Case IH 376374R91

For spark plugs I use Autolite part # 3116

For engine oil I would keep it simple use good 15W40 diesel like Rotella or something like that. You could also use 10w30. For hyd. oil I would use any universal trans. oil.

If the tractor has a 3 pt hitch and hydraulics its not a "B" or its a very modified B, yes you can use syn oil but a good brand of 30 wt oil will be fine, I run wall-mart Tech oil in mine.
Oil filter is a Fram C135, spark plugs AC87 or Champion 15A this site will have manuals available just click parts.
Good Luck with your new tractor, Ppost a picture of it. Does it have a narrow front or wide front axle?

Before you start blindly taking people's advice, we really should make sure what tractor you REALLY have.

A B with hydraulics and a 3pt hitch would be VERY unusual. Not impossible, but unusual.

The B does not have hydraulics or any provisions for hydraulics. Hydraulics would look very "added on."

More likely you have a different model tractor, perhaps a C.

Can you post a picture?

Wal-mart brand tech oil is made by Exxon mobile. I pick it up all the time in Paulsboro, NJ and deliver it to various wal-mart distruibution centers. Its good stuff.

You want pics, you got "em.

Looks like a "B" to me. Supposed to be a "47, but the serial number plate is gone, so who knows. Guess someone could tell me from the engine castings.

Aftermarket 3 point is a well done "home brew". Good welding, but holes are torch cut. Picks the woods mower up like it wasn"t there.

Would someone verify that this tractor has a tall oil filter canister? I got a replacement C135 Fram cartridge, but dimensionally it doesn"t appear to be tall enough to fit tightly in a vertical position inside the outer container (looks like it is about 3/8" too short). I need to get a new brass washer as well. It"s leaking all over and making a mess.

It also appears that the 3 point is running off of a separate hydraulic system than the touch control that is used for cultivator set up(?)Where do you fill and drain this hydraulic add on???

I have got to get a shop manual for this ride.

Mr. Mulebag:

I pulled all four plugs; 1 Autolite, 3 Champions. None were the same part number. Kinda confusing, however, I understand that whoever was "plowing" with this tractor was probably just loading it with whatever plugs he/she had available in the used plug box they had in the tractor shed. Of course, this means that everything on the tractor is suspect until I can go through it in detail. I"m sure you folks here on the forum are going to be a great assistance to me in this adventure.

Is there anyway to log onto this site so when a guy goes to post he doesn"t have to enter in his handle and email each time he wants to post something? Maybe I have just overlooked the login box.
