just a question on ih big truck engines, im having to sell my big kenworth dump truck so i can eat this winter, trucking around here isnt slow, its stopped, but im wanting to get a smaller say 6-8 yd dump so i can still work and pull my tractors around, ih is plenty good enough for me, in looking at the adds i see a variety of engines in the older ih trucks, [ i need cheap but runs] the dt 466 is a big truck engine isnt it? also in the same chassis class i see 7.3' ih, 5.9 cummins, and 8.3 also, so givin that total weight will be less than 30,000 which engine combination will be the best choise for power AND fuel economy also the most reliable, dont really need to stick with my kw's 4 mpg

We've got a '71 1310 1 ton all original with 39,xxx original miles. It runs great and the dump works perfect. Its gonna need a little brake work and some TLC, but overall is a straight solid truck.

If you're intrested email me at [email protected] and I can send you some pictures and possibly a video.

We thought about keeping it and using it around the place, but we really wouldn't use it enough to fool with. We'll sell it to you at a good price if you've got CASH.

the dt 466 engines are bullet proof. only problem i've had with them is the damn oil pans rot out, but the are easy to replace. i see them go 150k with no problems. 30 qt crankcase, its a real truck engine in and around the 30,000 pound class. cummins motors mentioned have injection pump issues, injectors stink, and you will likely be doing a head gasket along the way. also have alot of leaks around the front engine cover and i saw one throw a rod just this week at 140K.

I think either would be ok. Ive seen B series cummins go 500K. As you know PM's are EVERYTHING! The 7.3 is the same engine that ford used (powerstroke). Im not so sure if that is the same engine ford is using anymore. The main thing I would keep in mind. Ease of parts availbility. I wouldn't be so sure about the 8.3. Im not familiar with it. I would be inclined to stick with the b-series (5.9 cummins). It has replacable sleeves like a big truck engine where as a 7.3 does not. I.E. ease of in-frame or replace "just the parts that are bad" type thing.

DT466/467/468 good IH engine, 8.3 was used a lot by CaseIH, good engine, 466 cu in or 8.3 = 505", good choice in medium size truck. DT466/7/8 was variations in design such as lifters, inj pump, intercooler & other misc items. IH made 466 & used in AG/MT/CE Divisions so it was pretty well developed & reliable.
