Future tractor decision

I've been looking around for the past few months for the right tractor to have sitting around just in case our New Holland TL80 went down and there was hay on the ground. A local tractor sales/salvage yard has a 706 diesel that I saw the other day when I drove by lookin over his selection the other day. They weren't open at the time but what do you think this would be worth? just a drive by glance looks like it has ok tires and ok paint (definetly original but not bad) and I don't know if I runs. Also I posted about an M the other day. Would it have enough power to run a 570 New Holland bailer and pull a full hay wagon? I know that the 706 would but I know the gas is cheaper to work on than a diesel. What is your guys opinions? Thanks!
 
The M is not suited for the baling job (at least in a decision making situation), it has no live PTO, and no live Hydraulics. It has just barely enough power for a small round baler. and plenty for a square baler, but it is just not handy. Pulling a wagon is no issue other than good brake maintenance if heavy wagons are used in hilly country.
The 706 is the tractor of choice if it runs well. Make sure the TA and primary clutches are good against full load situations. Starting and quick cleanup of white exhaust is very important. Jim
 
M on baler? M probably has the power for the small sqare balers- family used M on JD14T, 24T and a IHC 46? also NH something of neighbors. baler, flat rack with me and brother stacking was not much problem once started- the possible problem is pto is not live power, is tranny drive. When 560 and 350D came onto farm the M didn"t get used much for moving pto work. M can work but if you have alternative live pto then get out the alternative. Power steering is another thing M didn"t have, once you get used to power steering it"s hard to go back for loaded turning use-foot brakes with baler on turn not the best idea. RN
 
Just for price would a super M or MTA be better? I don't wanna spend a ton on a tractor that would probably sit most of the time and would probably pull hay wagons back and forth. or get the bobcat unstuck or flipped back on the wheels. it tends to flip forward farely easy ha
The new holland we use definetly has better brakes but has no turbo and doesn't have live PTO (you have to turn it on with a button on the fender. also we bail about 36in long square bails
 
Also it doesn't really need hydraulics either. the only thing we would use hydrualics for is the bushhog or hey cutter as they need a 3 point
 
I don't know a ton about numbered tractors but if the choice were between the M and an SMTA and you think it will run the baler...go with the SMTA. No substitute for independant PTO in running a baler. SMTA will hold value well also as it is a desirable tractor. Either will pull loaded wagons. I have pulled three loaded wagons with a SMTA at the same time up and down hills with the baler in front and the rake behind. A real traffic stopper. It's a good heavy puller with loaded tires.
 
We had a pair of 706D's with D282's, including the original demonstrator that came through the dealership, and loved 'em- very nimble tractor for it's size, enough power for any regular chore, pretty good on fuel, and very dependable. IMHO the "hard starting" rap for the D282 is undeserved, you just had to have the patience to hold that glow plug button long enough, especially in the winter, and they fired right up, hold the button until the white smoke quit, no problem
I love my M's, have a regular, an SM, and two SMD's, but they're not serious work tractors right now, if I had the choice between a 706D and an M for a "real" work tractor, it wouldn't take me very long to make up my mind- even the 450 gas I just got makes the M's look stone age with it's IPTO, TA, live hydraulics with 3 remotes, etc
