Farmall M Brake Drum Grease Seals?

Anyone have part number(s) for replacement grease seals for brake drums used on a 1951 Farmall M? The old one I removed (mangled in the process) is a two-seal assembly comprised of two grease seals separated by a thin metal spacer and all enclosed by an outer sleeve. The part number found on the back lip of the sleeve is C/R 45073-D. No part numbers on the seals but they look identical.

I read somewhere on this forum that the dual seal assembly is no longer available and when replacing, one must now install two separate seals. Without the sleeve, the seals will need to have slightly larger O.D. than the original seals that were contained in the sleeve.

Thanks for any help!

The replacement seals will fit just fine. One new, thinner seal will do the job if you install it to allow the seal edge to ride on an un-worn part of the drum.

One of the new seals will be sufficient. If you buy from an IH dealer give him the number off the old seal and he will provide the correct new style seal. Also, if you have a good NAPA dealer, he can cross reference the IH number and give you the correct seal.

Case IH # 610870C92. NAPA # NOS 28687. Chicago Rawhide is probably the same # without the NOS in front. Have used National # 417344 without any problems. It crosses to a NAPA # NOS 28687.
Around 10 bucks cheaper than the first two.

Thanks for the help guys - that's the information I was looking for. Also, do I understand correctly that the replacement seals are sized to install directly in the bore of the bearing cage without the sleeve used with the dual seal assembly? Also, if I decide to use just a single seal as has been suggested, any there any tips for installing the seal so it runs on an unworn portion of the drum? I'm a novice at this and learning as I go.

45073D was original 2 or 3 lip leather seals, IH subbed them to new neoprene single lip, ID & OD should match but depth less, check wear area on shaft, try to position seal on area not grooved, youve got more depth room or put 2 new seals per side.

To RPM1941,
Thanks for your response. Just to be sure I'm clear on this, are you saying the OD of the replacement seal will be the same as the OD of the sleeve used with the older double seal assembly? In that case, the sleeve is no longer needed and can be eliminated. I understand what you're saying about positioning the single seal so the rubber seats on "fresh metal" on the brake drum hub. Makes sense. Thanks again.

The original seal were assembled with outer thin shell & flat tin retainers on ends, this is all removed and new seals are molded 1 piece. ID should match shaft & OD should match bare housing. The new seals are very different looking but work just fine.
