Just because my stupid mind wonders, could a carrier be installed on the wrong side of the pinion, causing the tractor to move backwards in 5 speeds?

Yep. The straight bevel gears make it really easy. This was done by IH on the low drum cotton pickers and other odd industrial reverse operation applications.

Also lots of C's, H's, & M's were reversed in the sand hills of NE to be used as "sweep" tractors for haying. Some were also used as loader tractors that way. I've also seen old fork lifts and "honey bees" (BN's with loaders that were commonly used in tight places before skid loaders were developed) that use that method of reversing the direction of the tractor. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
