656 Hydro Diesel

No replies from last post. So I will try this again. I am having trouble with my forward on my hydro. Once it warms up it will not go forward, but it will go in reverse all day long. I am hoping it is the forward check valve. My question is where and how do I get to the check valve? Is it on the right hand side in front of the brakes behind the pump where the bigger hoses come in to the transmission? Can someone help me?

I can't help you very much, but there was some discussion on this board awhile back relating to this same issue. You can probably do a search of the archives to find it, or maybe someone else can jump in here and give a little insight.

First thing to do is to cap off the fittings coming out of transmission going to the control valve. Two small steel pipes. This will eleminate all outside valves. When you do this give your self some room as you will not be able to stop tractor with the foot-n-inch valve, only the S-R (speed ratio) lever. If it pulls fwd ok with the fittings capped off you know your problem lies outside in other words in the control valve assembly. There are two capsules in there and eiether one can be the problem as they each have two seperate function circuits inside of them. If it still does not pull forward it could be several different things inside. Fwd relief valve partially stuck, check valve leaking, cracked steel lines etc. Well, you get the picture. You would need a manual to proceed to tear into it.

Ok im not sure this will help but my book says if it only goes in reverse and not forward it could be the internal shuttle valve stuck to the right and wont move or malfunction drive control valve or poor adjustment of valve linkage. Or a leak in the forward loop portion of the centre section or the forward check valve leaking. Its a complicated transmission and you have to go through a bunch of preasure checks to find out where to look for the problem. If you dont have a book and some special equipment it will be hard to fix your self. Erik..

If the snap ring that hold the centering spring on the valve comes off you will have reverse but no forward. You can usually get it to go forward by going into reverse first and then pushing the lever into the forward position.

As a first step, see if it works properly by holding the lever to the side when it is in the forward position. Wear in the lever can cause the control valve to stay in the neutral position even though you move the lever to the forward position. Since the problem is temperature related that is a likely cause of your problem.
