Nine speed M

I would like anyones thoughts on nine speed conversions on Farmall transmissions. I have a 47 M with nine speed trans and I love it. Very easy to shift when road traveling. This is not a working tractor but I used to have one on a tractor we used on the farm. I have heard they are weak but I have seen guys use them to pull with. Anyway I like it Thanks Bernie Steffen

i have a 9 speed m+w on one of my m's. love it, gives good transport speeds aside from road gear, and great on a rotary hoe!!

Bernie, I have both a M and H with 9 speed Heisler transmissions and really like them. I've had the M for several years and it is certainly a great transport tractor when hauling baled hay to the barn. I've never used it in tillage work but think that extra speed range whould come in handy for the lighter dirt stuff. I always heard they were awesome with a rotary hoe. I haven't used the H very much as I just acquired it recently but had been looking for one for years ever since I obtained the M. The Heisler (you may have a M&W as you didn't say) on a H is very difficult to find but should be equally as nice to use. Yes, they shift very nice and on my M it is normally always in high range for how it is used. I think ou are aware that they over speed your PTO and belly pump as well so you need to be careful when using those power devices. The Heisler has a disconnect to the belly pump you can activate when using the high speed range but I don't know what M&W offered with theirs. I never heard anything about one being a weak link in the drive train and not into pulling so don't have any comment for that portion of your thread, Hal.

My M has a M&W nine speed. It also has a shut off on the hyd pump. I usually don't shift ranges on the move. When shifting from fourth to fifth, just remove from fourth double clutch drops right into fifth. Not a scratch. Is a Heisler the same ratio as the M&W? 1st through fourth in low range then high range first to fourth again. Thanks for all the info. Bernie Steffen

I don't have the ratios on the Heisler as I haven't been able to find any litature on them anywhere for sale. They are like what you describe as the four high range gears (1st through 4th) are all faster then the normal 4th and I would guess 4th in the high range (Heisler engaged) is something like 12 mph. A good speed with some torque as that is what my uncle used in Iowa to haul wagons of corn back to the crib down the county road so he had some power on the slight grade he had to travel, Hal.

I haven't seen the actual ratios listed anywhere. But Heisler listed these speeds for a Farmall M, with 12x38 high cleat tires:

1 2.68
2 3.56
3 4.36
4 5.29
1OD 5.76
2OD 7.64
3OD 9.35
4OD 11.3
5 16.75

R 3.24
ROD 6.95

PTO 565
PTOOD 1160

All was the same for an H except:
4 5.38
4OD 11.5
