H Ground and buying tips?

Hey Guys:
I have a chance to purchase a Farmall H, but I haven"t had a chance to look at it yet. Heard about if from my son, so I still need to look at it. The guy that has the tractor said something to my son about the battery may need replacing. Anyway, I did some searching on the archives but could not find what I was searching for.

Anyway, if this has the 6volt battery, do these have positive ground or negative?

As I have not looked at it yet, I don"t know the year, but are there any major "gotchas" to look for when buying one of these?

The main reason I want to purchase it is because it has a loader on it, and I have some light duty uses for the loader. I understand it won"t have live power, but I think I can live with that if the price winds up being fairly cheap

See how the old battery is connected as guys sometimes reverse polarity through the years either accidentally (the more common cause) or on purpose. Id call it POSITIVE GROUND originally (and thats how Id configure her for uniformitys sake and electrical parts such as a Voltage Regulator if it has one that is)

To be on the safe side if you install a new battery Id POLARIZE THE GENNY PRIOR TO START UP. If battery polarity is reversed the ammeter leads need swapped or she reads bass ackwards and if its a coil ignition instead of a mag the coil leads also need swapped.

6 volt, positive ground from the factory, but that doesn't mean that is what it has now. No major "gotchas", except that these Hs are all 60+ years old. A few minor differences from one year to the next, but basically an H is an H is an H.

Ok. Thanks for the help and the tips. I will check out the battery to see how it is connected. I am hoping someone already did the 12volt conversion, but I have my doubts.

I"ve never had one of these Farmalls yet, but I do have a couple of Allis-Chalmers and a couple of JD"s. I always heard these IH"s were a pain to work on as a buddy was telling me you have to split the tractor"s to work on them, but I guess I"ll find out.

Unless theyve been replaced youll probly need seals. The local IH dealership has all of them that you would need plus just about anything else

Using the loader without live power is a real pain. I have an H, but would look for something with live power. It really slows down your loader work.

(quoted from post at 03:42:02 09/21/10) Just got to know how to use a laoder we got along just fine when they were new.

Agreed. My loader tractor is a 1950 H with a McCormick #31 loader. I get along just fine.
