International I 9

I recently purchased an International I9. The tractor had a one inch thick steel plate push bar (3"x3") mounted on the front to push rail cars in the yard for Union Pacific. There is still a tag on the hood that reads U.P.R.R and a serial number. Has foot throttle, pintle hitch, MASSIVE rear wheel centers and wheel weights and HUGE 4 banger. Funny looking rear end compared to a W9. There tractor is painted dark green, but i can see red underneath. The serial plate is missing and I was wondering what year it could be. All casting codes are 9-15-K except engine which is a Z. (Z is 1954 so it should have a 350ci instead of oringal 332?) Tractor was used in Washington state until it UPRR sent it to Omaha, Nebraska. I live in Center of Nebraska.

There are two 9 series axle housings. There is one that can be seen on all W-9's and most I-9's. The alternate housing has a boss and bolt pattern for a direct mounted winch such as used on tracked vehicles. I don't think that most people notice the difference even when two 9 series are parked together. If you have something truly unusual, you should post a picture. Heck, post one anyway.

I only have a W-9 book and the alternate housing is not listed. I-9 book should have it.

I have two I-9s and one 650. They all have the same axle housing.

ID plate is attached to front gas tank mount. It can be seen from the right side. I bet it is still there but obscured with grime.

the rear axle housing has two bosses that the pintle hitch goes to toward the top with large square headed inch bolts. the rear end housing and axle extensions are all one piece. some idiot cut the pintle coupler to make room for the w9 pto that was added. very unusal rear wheel centers. fully cast with no holes and wheel weights to boot. split type rear rims. 32 tires i think.

oh ya...plate is gone. Of all my tractors, this is the only one without a tag. casting code "K" on all pieces but motor. 1940?? thanks for the help.

I have an I6 and the axle housings are different than the W-6. It is a narrower tread than the W. I don't have 9 info, but I bet there were similar set ups for the 9 like my I-6. My 6 has the solid cast rear wheel hubs. They are 3 inches thick at the outer edge and more like 6 or 7 inches at the axle. I bet they weigh in at 400 lbs or more for each one. My 6 was used as a farm tractor because the farmer that got it originally could not get anything else in 1945, so he took the I-6. It has different gears than the W6. 4th gear is fast, and 3rd is about the same as normal 4th. 1st gear is slower than the normal 1st gear. The brakes were shot on mine and I had to take the rear rims off the hubs to get at the brakes to fix them. The rims were solidly rusted to the hubs and it took me three weeks and a special made puller system to get the first one off. The puller system used high strength threaded rod (I think it is 5/8) though all 8 of the mounting bolt holes. It still took 3 days(the second side) of soaking with PB blaster and a cheater on the bolts to break it loose. After learning, the second one came off in about 3 days. Yes...I did try driving around with the attachement bolts out. That had no effect whatsoever. My I6 has the normal M front wheels, but many have a solid cast front wheel hub as well and the wheels are larger than the 16 inch M wheels. I've seen 9s with those large solid cast front wheels as well. On the I's, the front axles are heavier made too.

I am familiar with the pintle setup. One of my I-9's had both the pintle and PTO. No need to modify either when used together.

I also have a nice pair of 15-32 tires if you need them. The modern designation would be 18.4 x 32 if you can find them. I am in Massachusetts. Let me know if you need other parts.

I have an I9 that has a diffrent rear than the SWD9 I have it has the flat spots and places that look like you could drill and tap holes for mounting something like a winch. Wardner was the one who actually saw it and noticed the difference in the 9 series rear diffs at a show I will try to see if I have some pics or will get some and post them

after looling at the i 9 photos that were posted, my rear is different. a rounded rear end at the bottom, not square. I will try to get some photos uploaded.

K is a 1941 casting. tractor could be a 41 or a 42 depending on what months most castings are.
first production I 9 was built the last month of 1940.
