Farmall M - Rubber Washer on Brake Drum

Rebuilding Brakes on my Farmall M I found there is a rubber washer that fits in a recess in the outer bore of the brake drum and rests against the end of the splines. It's maybe about a 1/16" thick. On top of this rubber washer is a somewhat larger metal washer that presses the rubber washer into the splines, maybe to prevent grease leakage there. The old washers are quite brittle and one broke apart upon removal. Any suggestions on what to replace these washers with?

EPDM from a roofing installer is a great source 60 mil thickness. Innertube rubber will deteriorate rather rapidly. Another source is synthetic mats used for drawing boards. Offset printing blankets are oil resistant as well. Jim

first off, I do not believe they were rubber, I believe they were gasket material............which is what I made mine out of. Use a small ballpeen hammer (the round side), place the sheet of gasket material over the outside end of the brake drum. Using medium light blows, you will cut the gasket to fit the recess. Now, with the gasket in the recess, take the same hammer, and tap at the center where the bolt goes. Once again, you will cut the center bolt hole out.

If you happen to drive the piece of gasket cutout into the bolt hole, a simple penknife, or darning hook can be used to pull it out.

you now have a custom made gasket for the brake drum.

ps. the first cut is done with the brake drum off the axle. the bolt hole cut is done with the drum on the axle, but no bolt installed.
