SC - timing and vacuum

Have the operators manual and has read through several times about how to make sure the distributor and timing mark on the flywheel are in time. My tractor is off because now that the carburetor is working properly, it wants to kick back when trying to hand-crank - so I know that the timing is not kosher...

My dad always said one of the best ways to time a motor is to tap into a vacuum port and move the distributor until you have maximum vacuum at idle.

Would this work for the C123? Vacuum access is easy with the pipe plug just above the carb.

Thanks ahead.

Just use a timing light, sounds like your timing is
to advanced. There is no need to use a vacuum test
on these engines, fairly basic timing here.

The best and highest vacuum will result in the timing too far advanced. Time it at TDC on the flywheel when you turn it over by hand.

If you plan to hand crank all the time then set timeing statically at TDC like the book says and no earlier or it will kick. If you have and normally use a starter then Richard around with the timing all you want but remember if the battery goes dead don't try to hand crank.

Using a vacuum gauge for highest reading will result in over advance on this engine. I would make sure advance mechanism is in good conditon and time it to tdc static timing. Many starter drives are destroyed by over advanced timing let alone a broken arm when hand cranking.
